A bite from the apple

So at one point of your life you find yourself in New York.
Gosh! None told you lies. Energy flows everywhere: up on the cement bars of the skyscrapers, inside the green
parks that flourish where you wouldn’t expect it and through the touching elbows of the crowd that march along the avenues.
As Billy Joel said, NY is a state of mind and I want to celebrate its distinctiveness with some suggestions of good books about The Big Apple.
If it happens that you’re about to board a flight to NY, please take note! “Shopaholic abroad” by Sophie Kinsella, is the story of Becky, the protagonist, captured by the screaming sirens of the commercial scene of NYC.
All the books by Candace Bushnell are a must. I especially like “One Fifth Avenue”, a novel about what happens inside a magnificent building at the center of Manhattan’s elite.
“Ask any girl” by Winifred Wolfe is about the funny adventures of a country girl who found a job and Mr. Right in New York.
“Bergdorf Blondes” by Plum Sykes shares the secrets of Manhattan socialites.
My favorite ever: “Lucia, Lucia” by Adriana Trigiani is about a girl who worked in the fashion industry in 1950’s.

Così, a un certo punto della tua vita, ti ritrovi a New York. Argh! Nessuno ti ha mai nascosto la verità.
L’energia scorre ovunque: in alto, lungo le gabbie di cemento dei grattacieli, all’interno dei parchi, che fioriscono in città dove meno te l’aspetti, e perfino tra i gomiti della folla che cammina fianco a fianco per le strade.
Come cantava Billy Joel, NY è uno stato mentale e, per l’occasione, vorrei celebrare la sua unicità suggerendo qualche buona lettura sull’argomento. Se state per saltare sul prossimo volo diretto verso la Grande Mela, per favore prendete nota!
“I love shopping a New York” di Sophie Kinsella racconta come Becky, la protagonista, viene catturata dalle mille tentazioni dello scenario commerciale newyorkese.
Tutti i libri di Candace Bushnell sono imperdibili, soprattutto “One Fifth Avenue”, ambientato all’interno di una delle magnifiche residenze della zona più esclusiva di Manhattan.
“Tutte le ragazze lo sanno” di Winifred Wolfe, il racconto ironico e arguto di una ragazza di campagna che trova un impiego e il Principe Azzurro nella Grande Mela.
“Biondo n. 5” di Plum Sykes che svela i segreti delle ragazze più “in” di Manhattan.
Il mio preferito in assoluto, purtroppo mai tradotto in italiano: “Lucia, Lucia” di Adriana Trigiani, la vicenda di una ragazza di origini italiane che, nei lontani anni ’50, lavora nell’ambiente della moda.
